Nevada Virtual Academy Class of 2018 Set Up For Success





Nevada Virtual Academy is an online public charter school which provides Nevada students a tuition-free learning environment for grades K-12. Don't let the online part fool you into thinking every day is a party complete with movies, pizza, and ice cream. Nevada Virtual Academy provides the necessary structure, administrative support, accountability, and state testing required by all Nevada public schools.

Students work closely with a state-licensed teacher via email, telephone, and online meetings. Through the use of textbooks, CDs, videos, and other hands-on tools ensure students receive proper instruction for each subject.

K12 President of Academics, Policy, and Schools and national education reform advocate Kevin P. Chavous and Nevada Assemblyman Tyrone Thompson will each deliver a keynote address.
“As Nevada Virtual Academy seniors get ready to take on the next chapter in their lives, the Class of 2018 is set up for success,” Chavous said. “It is gratifying to offer K12-powered students a personalized learning model that meets the diverse needs of all students.”
More than 180 students will graduate from NVVA, which provides a blended learning program that combines online learning with face-to-face instruction. The school, which is open to students in kindergarten through 12th grade, offers a robust Advanced Learner Program, honors, and Advanced Placement® courses.
Ten members of the Class of 2018 will also graduate with an Associate Degree from Western Nevada College, thanks to the Jumpstart program, which offers qualified juniors and seniors the opportunity to earn college credit while still in high school.

Ten students who earned a 4.8 weighted GPA or better throughout high school will serve as the co-valedictorians of the Class of 2018 – Crystal Atoz, Yesenia Castillo, Valerie Croswhite, Tyra Jones, Abbie Omer, Estephanie Padilla, Heather Schaffnit, Maya Simms, Kayla Trickel and Eden Woolworth. In addition, John Jahanpour-Burke is the salutatorian. Jones and Padilla will both deliver valedictory remarks.
Sixty-one of NVVA’s graduates are expected to receive the Millennium Scholarship, and seven are eligible for the Nevada Promise Scholarship.
The graduates report that they have been accepted to a number of colleges and universities, including UNLV, Arizona State University, University of Nevada-Reno, College of Southern Nevada, Nevada State College, University of Ohio, Long Beach City College, New Mexico State University, BYU-Idaho, Southern Utah University, Savannah College of Art and Design and Mesa Community College. In addition, 11 students plan to join the military.
